A1 Licence

The A1 license is the first rung on the bike licensing ladder, and allows you to ride motorcycles and mopeds that are 125cc or larger with the power up to 11 kW. It is available at the age of 17, and is a great choice for those who want to begin their motorbike journey in an easy way.
To obtain an A1 licence you will be required to complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and pass both a theory and two-part practical test. The CBT course is essential for motorcycle training and prepares you for both the theory and practical test. To pass your A1 test, you'll need to be accompanied by an instructor who is certified in motorcycles. The test will last about 20 minutes and will comprise two modules. Module 1 is conducted in the training center and will focus on off road maneuvers, such as controlled stop, a slalom or the figure eight. If you choose to go the A2 option, you'll be required to pass Module 1 and Module 2 of your motorcycle test. Both tests are performed on a motorcycle that qualifies for A2 eligibility, and both modules can be booked through the same place as your CBT course as well as the theory test. The A2 test is best suited to riders who passed their CBT course fairly quickly and are ready both financially and experientially for the possibility of a larger motorcycle.
Module 1 of your A2 motorcycle test is a car park session where you will learn how to control your bike with a slow speed, manoeuvring and emergency stops. Then, you'll be taking the on-road portion of the test, where you'll be required to demonstrate hazard avoidance exercises and road positioning. You are also required to conduct lifesaver checks and maintain a two-second gap to the vehicle ahead of you. There are minor mistakes that you can make that can lead to 10 violations. This includes not using your mirrors and failing to maintain a safe distance.
If you pass both the modules of your A2 motorcycle test, you will be allowed to ride any motorbike that falls in the A2 category. This includes the well-known Honda CB500F or Yamaha MT-07 model. These bikes are not particularly powerful but they are more than capable to take on the most demanding speeds, and offer a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

A3 Licence
The A2 Licence allows riders to upgrade to larger bikes that have more power. The A2 Licence also offers additional advantages that you can't enjoy with the CBT. For instance, you can ride on motorways or carry passengers. You can upgrade from CBT to the A2 licence through additional training and passing the relevant practical exams. The A2 license is valid for two years and may be upgraded to a full, unrestricted A license after two years.
The first step to getting your A2 license is to be able to pass the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) test and Motorcycle Theory Test. After you have completed these requirements, you're ready to take the Module 1 or Module 2 practical test. The module 1 test will test your riding abilities on a closed circuit, whereas the module 2 test entails riding on an open road.
During the A2 practical test, you will need to be able to demonstrate excellent observation skills and anticipate hazards on the road. You should also be able use the correct road positioning and execute controlled maneuvers. For instance, you should be able to perform an U-turn and then execute a figure of eight. You must be able control your bike at a slow speed for instance, when turning at intersections, or responding to traffic signs.
After passing your A2 test, you can begin to work towards obtaining your full A license. You can do this by either passing the direct entry exam or following the progressive access route. To qualify for direct entry you must pass the theory test and complete the mod 1 and module 2 practice tests with a bike that is at minimum 54bhp.
The A1 and A2 licenses differ from the rest of the UK's motorbike licenses because they are restricted by weight-to-power ratio, not engine cc's. Even 600cc bikes may be A2 conforming if equipped with restrictor kits. It is important to remember that not all bikes claiming to be A2 compliant are A2 compliant. Do some research before buying one.
A4 Licence
The A4 Licence enables motorists to drive vehicles with more than three wheels. This license includes buses, trucks and coaches. It also covers vehicles carrying dangerous goods. Drivers must pass a criminal background test to be eligible for the license. The Digital Driving Licence displays important information, such as the date of issuance and classes of vehicles in which the motorist is certified to drive.
In order to get an A1-A4 license the driver must complete training at a local transportation office or an approved driving school. They also must pass a physical examination. The course runs for approximately 5 hours (1 day) and includes lectures on driving etiquettes, defensive driving and related laws.
Once the application is successful The driver will then receive an 'application notice' which must be displayed at their location. They'll be charged a cost which varies based on the rateable value of the premises. After paying the fee, drivers will be issued a 'licence summaries by post. The remaining pages of the license should be kept in a secure area, as police or council officials may ask to see them.
